So I’m a month behind the times

I’m finally posting my top 10 albums of 2007 list, as if anyone cares at this point.

  1. Spoon — Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
  2. The National — Boxer
  3. Okkervil River — The Stage Names
  4. Battles — Mirrored
  5. Of Montreal — Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
  6. Radiohead — In Rainbows
  7. Voxtrot — Voxtrot
  8. Super Furry Animals — Hey Venus!
  9. Modest Mouse — We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
  10. Animal Collective — Strawberry Jam

No, it didn’t take me a whole month to review my library and filter my list down to ten entries — although 2007 was a pretty damn good year for music. I just got distracted.

And yes, I kinda hate myself for including Animal Collective.

    Alright, here’s mine:

    1. Modest Mouse — We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
    2. Battles — Mirrored
    3. The National — Boxer
    4. Animal Collective — Strawberry Jam
    5. Spoon — Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
    6. Pinback — Autumn of the Seraphs
    7. Radiohead — In Rainbows
    8. Of Montreal — Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
    9. Ryan Adams — Easy Tiger
    10. Okkervil River — The Stage Names

Honestly, it was really hard for me to come up with the list this year - life was busy, but more importantly, there was a wealth of great music in 2007. The albums in my sizeable “almost made it” list are all pretty strong efforts, and it was tough to leave them out.

And yes, I put Modest Mouse at #1. Sue me.

One final note: though I didn’t do a top 10 songs list this year - it was just too fucking hard - I feel compelled to give Andrew Bird’s “Armchairs” special recognition. I think it’s easily his best work, but more than that, one of the most affecting songs I’ve ever heard. Were I to do a list, it’d take #1 no contest.

But a list of 1 isn’t very impressive, so let’s just say “it’s a good song” and leave it at that.

Well, these lists are pretty similar. I wonder how many of these albums we’ll be listening to a year from now. I haven’t touched most of the albums from last year’s list in months.

I did ok actually. While Asobi Seksu/Junior Boys/Grizzly Bear don’t get much play, I do revisit a number of the others.

Except Liars. You have to be in a very, very weird mood to sit through and truly enjoy that album.

I think that Annuals - “Be He Me” should get the Best Album of 2006 Discovered in 2007 award. Also, Battles takes best show of the year.

Most dissapointing album of the year goes to Coheed and Cambria. I wasn’t expecting much, but damn.

I’m not sure which was most disappointing for me, but Arcade Fire, Wilco, and the New Pornographers all put out pretty bad records this year (and those are just off the top of my head).

Yeah, that Coheed album has like two good songs, and two ok songs. To add insult to injury, it was the last thing I got from the pink palace. Salt in the wound man.

But I wasn’t expecting too much from C&C either. I was, however, expecting something much more than what Sky Blue Sky delivered. Most disappointing album goes to Wilco for me, with Minus the Bear’s Planet of Ice taking a close second. Come to think of it, that Bright Eyes album was kind of a let down too.

Oh, and I completely agree with you on that Annuals album Matt. I was hoping it was a 2007 release so I could put it on my list.

Nice list, Spoon and Okkervil River are just amazing. They just keep getting better and better.
